A federal decree was issued in 2019 to ban marriage for individuals under 18 in 31 out of 32 states, eliminating exceptions that previously allowed local authorities and families to consent to child marriages. Baja California remained an exception at that time but by 2020 exceptions were eliminated. Later in 2024, Mexican Senate unanimously approved a constitutional reform to Article 2, explicitly prohibiting child marriages in indigenous communities.
