Personal Status Code 1956 (amended 2007)
ABOUT THE LAW AND ANY EXCEPTIONS
The Personal Status Code was amended in 2007 to raise the legal age of marriage to 18. However, the code allows marriage below these ages with judicial consent.
In 2016, a high-profile case of an adult man marrying a 13-year-old girl after he impregnated her came to light. The court permitted this marriage due to the Tunisian Penal Code exonerating men who have forced or unforced sex with a minor if they marry their victim. In 2017, these articles in the Penal Code were repealed.
