ABOUT THE LAW AND ANY EXCEPTIONS

Although the Child Rights Law, passed in 2019 and prior to the military coup in 2021, states that the legal age of marriage is 18 for both men and women, it is unclear if customary law takes precedence. For example, under the Burmese Buddhist Women’s Special Marriage Law (which specifically legislates for marriage between a Buddhist woman and a non-Buddhist man), parental consent allows girls as young as 14 and boys as young as 16 to marry.
