ABOUT THE LAW AND ANY EXCEPTIONS
The legal ages of 18 and 20 for women and men were reiterated in the 2014 Law on Marriage and Family, which also provided detail of the penalties for marrying a minor or being involved in the marriage of a minor. While these include custodial sentences, the fines are likely to be insufficient to act as a deterrent. Although some child marriages are reported to be conducted under customary practices, there is no provision in Vietnamese law for customary laws. In addition, the marriage ages are not based on the legal age of majority in Vietnam, which in 2016 was reiterated to be 16.
