Marriage is permitted below 18 years with a waiver from the provincial governor. Marriage below the age of 21 requires parental consent. In 2016, the Government of Burundi passed a new law on gender-based violence. It defines forced and early marriage as forms of gender-based violence, but the legal ages of marriage were not updated in line with this new law.

The 2016 law to prevent and punish gender-based violence explicitly states that schools must uphold the right to education for single mothers, and take appropriate measures to protect them from stigmatisation and social exclusion.
