Morocco's Family Code (the Moudawana) is shaped by Sharia law, raised the legal age of marriage to 18 from 15, and made other changes to slightly improve gender equality. However, the Moudawana currently allows marriage below 18 with judicial permission, and with no absolute minimum age. In December 2024, the government announced further reforms to the Moudawana, including adding an absolute minimum age of 17 for marriage with judicial permission. The proposals have yet to be approved by parliament.
