ABOUT THE LAW AND ANY EXCEPTIONS
In 2002, the Marriage Ordinance was amended to raise the legal age of marriage from 16 to 18 with parental consent. A decade later, the Children, Young People and Family Welfare Act 2013 amended the Marriage Ordinance, enabling a person to marry with parental consent from the age of 17. However, the Kiribati's constitution and the Laws of Kiribati Act 1989 recognise customary law, and under customary law there is no minimum age for marriage.
CAN MARRIED OR PREGNANT GIRLS GO TO SCHOOL?
The Education Act of 2013 explicitly prevents schools from disciplining a girl for being pregnant or a parent, as well as preventing them from restricting or prohibiting their participation in school activities and from suspending or expelling a pregnant or parenting girl.
