ABOUT THE LAW AND ANY EXCEPTIONS

CAN MARRIED OR PREGNANT GIRLS GO TO SCHOOL?

Thailand's Civil and Commercial Code states that the legal age for marriage is 17 (or 'once their seventeenth year is completed') but for people below the age of 20, marriages require parental consent. If a person is under 17 years old, they can still get married, but court approval and the consent of a parent or guardian are required. In addition, for the Muslim population in Thailand, Islamic law applies and is legally recognised. In 2018, Thailand's Central Islamic Council revised its marriage regulations: individuals under the legal age (17) are still permitted to marry, but require approval from a religious committee.

The Act for Prevention and Solution of the Adolescent Pregnancy Problem protects the rights of pregnant girls and makes provision for health care and social protection. However, the rights of parenting children are not mentioned in the Act.
