On 9 January 2026, Scale Up Girls marked the start of its new year activities with a school based engagement at Hassan Memorial Secondary School in Kabala, Kaduna State, as part of the 100 days of action to end child marriage. The visit combined awareness raising with practical support, creating space for learning, dialogue, and commitment to ending child marriage.

During the engagement, teachers’ packs and school materials were shared with the school, reinforcing the importance of education as a protective factor against child marriage. The session focused on helping students and teachers understand what child marriage is, why it is harmful, and how communities and schools can play a role in preventing it.

The session was led by Zainab Salisu, a volunteer teacher, and brought together 22 students. Conducted in Hausa, the discussion ensured that the message was accessible and clearly understood by all participants. Students actively engaged with the conversation, asking questions and reflecting on how child marriage affects children’s rights, education, and future opportunities.

At the close of the session, 20 students took the pledge to say no to child marriage, demonstrating strong ownership of the message and a willingness to stand up for their rights and the rights of their peers. Teachers also expressed their appreciation for the engagement and for the support provided to the school.

The visit highlighted the power of school based action in building awareness and shaping attitudes. By combining education, dialogue, and pledging, this engagement strengthened the shared commitment of students and teachers to protect children and work towards a child marriage free future in their community.
